Our mission

La mission de Minéro – Musée de Thetford | KB3 consiste à conserver, étudier,
interpréter et diffuser des collections représentatives de la géologie des Appalaches et du patrimoine minier de la région de Thetford Mines.
Le Musée de Thetford a pour mandat d’éveiller la curiosité scientifique reliée aux sciences de la Terre.
Le KB3 a pour mandat de mettre en lumière l’histoire minière régionale et de faire découvrir les techniques d’exploitation de l’époque.

The institution's museum program consists of conducting and encouraging research enabling the identification and understanding of the Museum's collections, their role and their meaning within society.

It consists of disseminating scientific and technological knowledge related to regional mining activity while popularizing this area of ​​knowledge and its achievements.

Through its exhibitions, its publications and its educational program, the Museum contributes to raising awareness of its region in geological and mining terms, as well as to raising public awareness of the importance of preserving this heritage.

Finally, the Museum makes traveling exhibitions produced by Quebec and Canadian museums accessible to the regional population.

HISTORY

1976

Foundation of the museum by the Mineralogical Society of the Asbestos Region (SOMIRA) located at the Black Lake cultural center

1978

Installation of the Museum at the College of the Amiante region in Thetford Mines.

1997

Moving to a new construction offering a space more suitable for exhibitions and collections located on Frontenac Boulevard in Thetford Mines.

2016

Ouverture du Centre historique de la mine King | KB3, intégrant des bâtiments restaurés et enrichissant l’offre culturelle de l’institution.

2020

Transformation of the brand image into Minéro – Thetford Museum | KB3, symbolizing a new era of cultural engagement and innovation.

2021

Introduction d’une nouvelle galerie d’exposition souterraine au Centre historique de la mine King | KB3, élargissant l’expérience immersive du Musée.
